Since the kids have returned to school, I am creating a new routine for myself, both daily and weekly. I will not bore you with specifics, but I am hopefully going to keep up with my blogging, writing and cooking.
This is my schedule for the week:
Monday- blog posts, egg deliveries, purchase grain for the week
Tuesday- Pick up old produce at the grocery store for the pigs
Wednesday- bake for and attend the Farmer’s Market
Thursday- meetings, coffee with friends
Friday- egg deliveries, pick up more produce at the grocery store.
We have enlisted the help of several lists to aid the kids through their morning and bed-time routines. We have added in a chore chart too.
My daughter has kept up with her task of choosing her clothes Sunday night for the week. She even took it two steps further by choosing clothes for the weekend AND asking me to write out the days of the week to ensure she is super organized.
I think my favorite item on the bed-time routine list is “The 5 finger pick up.” This is where, at some point before or after they brush their teeth, they have to pick up and put away 5 things in their bedroom. Naturally I hope that they just continue and pick up an eighth or tenth thing, but they stick pretty closely to the five things. Crayons on the floor however count as one thing. We’ve been down that road already.
And even though the amount of tidying up is small, sometimes it is enough to bring the room back to a tolerable state of perfection. Sometimes it is just enough to clear a path to the bed. In the end, having a list the kids can check off once tasks are completed make me less of a nagging mom and puts more responsibilities in their hands.
